چکیده

Over the past several decades, the energy expenditure requirement of many occupations has diminished, and therefore, professions have become increasingly more sedentary [1] and as a result the amount of time dedicated to sedentary work-related tasks has drastically increased [2]. Unfortunately this trend toward decreased physical activity is expected to continue [3]. Workplace physical inactivity presents a number of health consequences [2] including an earlier onset of chronic disease, resulting in higher health care costs [4]. For example, men who reported more than 23 hours of sedentary activity per week were found to be at a 64% greater risk of mortality than those who reported less than 11 hours per week [5]. Further, higher levels of sedentary behaviors are associated with a 112% increased risk for diabetes, 147% increased risk for cardiovascular disease, 90% increased risk for cardiovascular mortality, and a 49% increase in the risk of allcause mortality [6].

Active workstations to fight sedentary behaviour.

BACKGROUND The impact of active workstations has been studied in several settings, and several outcomes have been investigated. However, the effects on health, work performance, quality of life, etc., have never been systematically reviewed. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the existing literature about active workstations and their possible positive health and work performance effects. DATA SOURCES W...

Mechanical efficiency of limb swing during walking and running in guinea fowl (Numida meleagris).

Understanding the mechanical determinants of the energy cost of limb swing is crucial for refining our models of locomotor energetics, as well as improving treatments for those suffering from impaired limb-swing mechanics. In this study, we use guinea fowl (Numida meleagris) as a model to explore whether mechanical work at the joints explains limb-swing energy use by combining inverse dynamic m...

The effect of a workstation designed for Sewing, on the neck and shoulder muscles of users

Background and Aims: Sewing is one of the occupations where the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders is high. Sewing conditions at the workstation have made them synonymous with musculoskeletal injuries in various areas of the body, particularly pain in the neck, shoulder, and upper back and even waist. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a workstation designed for tailor...

The effect of active workstation use on measures of cognition, attention, and motor skill.

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to assess participants' ability to perform tasks requiring attention, short term memory, and simple motor skill while sitting, standing or walking at an active workstation. METHODS Fifty participants completed the Stroop Color Word test (SCWT), Auditory Consonant Trigram test (ACTT), and Digital Finger Tapping test (DFTT) while sitting, standing and wa...

Patterns of Selection of Human Movements III: Energy Efficiency, Mechanical Advantage, and Walking Gait

Human movements are physical processes combining the classical mechanics of the human body moving in space and the biomechanics of the muscles generating the forces acting on the body under sophisticated sensory-motor control. One way to characterize movement performance is through measures of energy efficiency that relate the mechanical energy of the body and metabolic energy expended by the m...
